A wedding album usually has 20 spreads (40 pages). At its best it holds 50 to 65 photos, so every photo looks beautiful and clear, without squeezing photos together to make them fit. When the couple chooses more, we propose extra spreads, so the layout stays comfortable.
Many guides online say 60 to 120 photos. We recommend fewer. With fewer photos on the same spreads, each one is printed bigger, the pages have room to breathe, and the album reads like a story instead of a contact sheet. The numbers below come from the albums we design every season, for weddings and baptisms.
The short answer, in a table
| Album | What most guides say | What we recommend |
|---|---|---|
| Wedding album | 20 spreads, 60 to 120 photos | 20 spreads, 50 to 65 photos |
| Larger wedding album | 25 to 30 spreads, 100 to 150 photos | More spreads, set by the photos chosen for each moment. 100 photos usually sit well on about 30 spreads |
| Baptism album | rarely covered | 20 spreads, 50 to 65 photos |
| Parents' album | 10 to 15 spreads, 30 to 50 photos | Usually an exact copy of the main album in a smaller size |
Page, sheet or spread?
People search for all three, and they mean different things.
- A page is one side.
- A sheet is one leaf: the front page and the back page.
- A spread is what you see when the album lies open: the left page and the right page together. In a lay-flat album the photo can cross the middle, so a spread works as one wide canvas.

So 20 spreads are 40 pages. When a lab quotes an album “with 20 spreads”, it means 40 pages, and you design it spread by spread.
How many photos per spread?
There is no fixed number. In one album we use spreads with 1, 2, 3, 5 or 8 photos, sometimes even 10. The more photos you put on one spread, the smaller each photo gets and the heavier the spread feels. Mix them, and let the strongest photos have space.
- 1 photo across the whole spread: usually once in the album, rarely twice. Keep it for the most special photo: the couple at sunset, a beautiful moment from the day after, the couple's favourite, or one they asked for.
- 2 to 3 photos: the calm spreads, for the ceremony, the couple, the first look.
- 5 to 8 photos: details, getting ready, family groups, the party.
- 10 photos: possible, but only where many small moments belong together.

Does the album size change the number of photos?
No. The most common sizes are 30×30 cm and 20×20 cm, and the number of photos stays the same in both. The shape changes the layout. On a portrait album a landscape photo cannot fill a whole page, and on a landscape album a portrait photo cannot. There you need two or more photos on that page anyway. Plan the layouts for the shape, and keep the number of photos.
How many spreads for each moment of the day?
Follow the order of the real day: getting ready, the ceremony, the couple, family, the reception, the party. For a baptism, the same: the order in which the day happened.
The number of spreads for each moment depends only on the photos the couple chose for it. One couple keeps five photos of the ring exchange and a single photo of the entrance. Another keeps ten photos of the couple session and two from the reception. So one moment may need two or three spreads, while two moments with one or two photos each can share a spread. Count the photos of each moment first, then plan the spreads.
The first and the last page. The endpapers can hold whatever the couple wants: their names and the date, a wish, a line from a favourite song, an image, even their wedding invitation. The photographer's logo goes where it fits best. We usually put ours on the back endpaper; other photographers do it differently.
For photographers: how many favourites to ask for
From our own work:
- Tell the couple the number before they choose. At the studio, where they see the albums we propose, or on the phone, we say how many photos fit a 20-spread album: 50 to 65.
- Then let them choose freely in the gallery. We ask them to also mark the photo they want on the cover, if the album has a photo cover.
- Ask for notes on the photo itself. If they want a crop, black and white, or a photo in a certain place, they write it on the photo in the gallery, and we see it while we design.
When they choose more. It happens often: 100, 120, even 200 favourites for a 20-spread album. We remind them it is a lot. A couple cannot picture an album that has not been designed yet, so we design it with our own eye, without crowding the spreads, and we add the extra spreads it needs as a proposal. Then we tell them. They see the album, often on the 3D book, and decide: keep the extra spreads, or ask us for changes. Most couples like what they see and keep them.
If they keep more photos on the same spreads, we load the family spreads a little more and keep the ceremony and the couple spreads clean. Those are the pages they will open the album for.
Extra spreads. We charge extra spreads one by one. Most labs allow up to 70 or 80 spreads, but we do not suggest going near that: the album becomes too heavy to enjoy.
Parents' albums
Most parents ask for an exact copy of the main album in a smaller size, for example a 20×20 of the 30×30. It keeps the same spreads and photos, and it usually costs less than a new 20×20 with their own selection, which needs its own design. Some parents want their own photos and their own layout; then their album is planned the same way, by the photos they chose for each moment.
The most common mistake
Too many photos on too few spreads, to keep the cost of printing and design down. The album gets crowded, every photo gets small, and the couple pays for an album they will open less often. One or two extra spreads cost less than that.
Our secret: fewer is better
A wedding album is like the stories we read to our children. It tells the story of the day with few words. One photo can carry a whole moment: you look at it and the rest comes back. So the album keeps the most beautiful and the most special photos, and the gallery keeps the rest. We say the same to our couples.
How this works in Digital Album Studio
- Gallery. You upload the photos and send the couple a private link. They choose their favourites and write notes on the photos. Client galleries
- Favourites. You see how many they chose, the cover photo and every note in one place.
- Album. Their favourites become an album in one click, in the order you set, with automatic layouts you can change. Album design software
- Changes and approval. The couple pages through the album on any phone, leaves comments on a photo and approves it. Online album proofing
- Print. You export the files for your lab.
